Learning Blog

December 12 Friday 2014

Today we did our lit circle discussions. We wrote the goals that our group and ourselves want to improve on and two good things our group and ourselves did.

We did this because it is a good way to reflect on the book we are reading and what we read. It also allows us to connect to the text and get more comfortable talking in a group.
We have to finish the 3 words and sentence and we can work on the paragraph booklet

3 Word Challenge

Weihang                          3 Word Challenge                   12-14-2014

Hello everyone! I'm Weihang Zheng in Grade 8 from Fraser Heights Secondary School. New Year is just around the corner, and it's about time to be thinking of New Year Resolutions. This is the first time I am actually writing down my New Year Resolutions. I will be writing 3 attributes, a word each, that I wish to improve on, here it goes:

1.Patience; If only I was more patient, great things could come to me. People will see me as a less of a complainer, and I would satisfy myself. When there is a option like, would I rather get a small thing now, or a better thing later, I either half the same. However, looking back from the future, you won't regret choosing the better thing later.

2.Courtesy; I always thought that respecting your parents and teachers won't do you much good, but I was wrong. You can get many benefits by being nice to your parents and teachers. Better grades and more allowance are just a the minor ones.

3.Open; All my friends started as strangers, so why am I so shy to stranger? I doesn't make sense. Perhaps I made all my friends back when I was younger and more open. Being open doesn't just give you more friends, but helps you become successful in your business later on in life.

3 words

Creative - I chose this word because whenever I do projects I'm not that creative and the project is boring and dull. I should also be more creative in art and drama.

Stamina - I chose this word because when I run or exercise I run out of energy after a while. I also want to stay fit.

Health - I chose this word because I want to eat more fruits and vegetables and other healthy food. I want to cut down on eating junk food.

What

Today in class we marked our short story re-tests and that pretty much took up the whole first block but for the rest of the time we just did some silent reading with our lit circles books. The second block we started off by watching a video called failure and entrepreneurs. This video was about how failing is good and natural and how to develop your ideas that you just have floating around in your head. After that we watched Daniel Pink the one sentence project. This video was about how everybody has a sentence and how to create your own sentence. Then we watched a couple other videos of other kids and them coming up with their own sentence. Once we have finished watching all those inspirational videos we read on how for the longest time people have been setting their new year’s resolution but they always forget about it all together or just get tired of it. After all we just read we had to come up with three words that reflected on our habits and what we could have done better.

Why

We do tests so we can reflect on whatever we have just learned in our unit and refresh our memory of the subject. I think that we watched the video on the failures and entrepreneurs to show us that failure is just a part of growing and expanding your understanding on whatever subject that we wish to study. The one sentence project was great for reflecting on our past selves and by doing that we better the understanding of ourselves.

Reflections

I think that we could use the one sentence project and the three words that we came up with in our everyday lives because it just helps you get a better understanding of our selves and it could pull you together if you were struggling or falling apart. For example if you didn’t get that essay done on time and you were a bit behind on your work you could come up with three words that could motivate you to catch up and get back on track.

Homework

For homework today we have to come up with your three words and also your sentence. For our lit circles we have to finish our novels and dialectical journals for Friday.

Learning Blog for December 8th

What did we do? We did our dialectical journal discussions.

Why (Learning Intention) did we do it? It will teach us to have confidence when talking and to make connections and to see if we really know whats going on with the stories. Gives us a chance to asks questions about the book and hear a detailed response.

Reflections and connections I always enjoy doing the dialectical journal discussions because they are fun and they let me understand the story a lot more. Doing dialectical journals can really help during maybe innovation discussing a creation with your group is always the best idea.

Homework reminders Dialectical journals are due every Mondays. Then we do the discussions on Mondays.

Homework tips-hints The book we're doing our dialectical journals will help because we may not remember the exact quote and can just find it and write it out.

3 Words

I want to be quiet, smart, and independent because those are three things that help you through life easily. Being quiet can help concentrate and make me a more independent person. Being smart obviously is a great skill to have, it can give many choices in future jobs. I also want to be independent because I always stick with my friends, being by myself is an important skill for everyone, especially in the future.

3 Words & Explanation

The three words that I chose are focus, motivation and passion. I chose these words because I need to focus on what I am doing and only on one thing at a time. I need to stay motivated on what I’m doing because if I don’t I will never complete my task. If I never have a passion for what in working on I will never complete the task as well as I would have if I did.

Weihang Zheng                     Learning Blog                     2014-12-09

1.What did we do? We handed in and completed some due homework. We also got to work on the paragraph writing worksheet.

2.Why (learning intentions) did we do it? We practiced forming an outline and writing a draft for a paragraph because writing paragraphs is a very important part of writing.

3. Reflections and connections-how was/is today's class skills or subject matter relevant (important) beyond Hum 8? Where might it be useful and how? We need to be able to write good paragraphs for a job application, and if we want to be a author or any form of a writer

4. Homework reminders- what is due and when. We have our paragraph outline and draft due tomorrow.

5. Homework tips-hints, videos or resources that might help students do well on today's homework. If you want to describe a wonderful place you've been to, you should look back on your photo albums to remember what the place looked like.

Learning Blog (December 3rd)

1.What did we do?

We didn't do much homework that day. We mostly reviewed some stuff (tests, lit. circles, etc...) We then worked on a self assessment and paragraph writing worksheets.

2.Why (learning intentions) did we do it?

We reviewed our last test many did poorly on,  to see what we did wrong. I'm happy we are getting a retest as I am also one of those guys! We worked on the self assessment to reflect back and compare ourselves to how we were at the beginning of the first term. The paragraph writing worksheets were just to learn how to write better paragraphs.

3. Reflections and connections- how was/is today's class skills or subject matter relevant (important) beyond Hum 8? Where might it be useful and how?

We can use self assessment for doing a interview and paragraph writing skills for writing a resume or if you want to become a author or some job that involve.

4.Homework reminders- what is due and when?

We have the self assessment due on Friday. Try to work on as much of the paragraph writing worksheets as possible. Innovation Fair proposal due Dec. 9.  Also this is an online homework due as well!

5. Homework tips-hints, videos or resources that might help students do well on today's homework.

As far as the homework we were assigned to today, there is little resources that can help us other than our own brain. For genius hour, you can watch some creative/inspiring videos.

Learning Blog

What we did
Today in block one of humanities we learned and review how to navigate through the blog. We also learned how to change the background, font color and the template. We also did some trouble shooting about the blog and we answered questions about the blog. In block two we talked about skills such as comprehension and reading with a purpose. We also worked on our self-assessments and we talked about our older work and comparing it to now.

Why we did it
We did the self-assessments because then the teacher can see what level of learning we think we are at and we can think about what we have done better since the beginning of the year. We reviewed and learned more about the blog so that we would feel more comfortable using the blog. We answered Mrs. Lee’s questions about the blog so that the she would know that we know about the blog such as navigation and posting.

Reflection/Skills
The skills that we learned in humanities today are important. We learned how to navigate through the blog which will help us if we ever have blogs in the future. We also learned how to do a self-assessment which means it will be handy to know if you have to do a self-assessment in the future or an assessment for someone else.

Homework
Our Self-assessment is due on Friday. Our innovation week/fair proposals are due on December the ninth. Humanities re test is on Thursday December the fourth.

Homework tips
A homework tip is that you should always do it when you have the chance. Do it either right when you get home or 5-10 minutes after you get home. You will be relieved when it’s done but if you leave it then your homework will pile up and it will consume more time.

Learning Intention

Today we I guess presented our dialectical journals with our groups and another group. The thing I'm a little stuck on is presenting. I don't wamt to intterupt anyone neither do I want to stay quiet during the whole time my group is talking. The learning intention behind thid is to show us how to tal with our group and show us how to speak clearly. Something I'm doing better is asking more questions and trying to talk as much as I can.

Incredible Bigfoot Footage (2013)

I chose this video because we don't know if this is proof or not it could be fake, it could be a different animal. This video was show both sides of the argument like I said I would in my proposal. This video inspired me because maybe Bigfoot does exist, it makes me think what other animal would that be?

Weihang                   Club(s) and Team(s) I Joined         2014-10-19

After my first month in secondary school, I do not regret my life. Most activities we did were fun: classes, lunch break, clubs, and athletic teams. I will also talk about what I like and don’t like, though I should be talking about the title above.
Obviously I don’t have time for everything. There are at least ten clubs going on at lunch break and afterschool. Not to mention that even buying lunch and catching on my homework takes up almost all my time. In spite of this, I have spared some time to join one club and one team: Math Challengers and Cross Country running. Cross Country would be ending in a week for me but Math Challengers will be going on all year. I could find another sport to play for the school in the spring such as Track. I also checked out the swim team but I didn’t feel like joining this year, I really need to improve at swimming before I go to swim meets.
Both those I joined recently are both fun and competitive. We are forming a math team only if everyone is smart enough. Also I already went to my first Cross Country league race (Must compete in at least one to make Fraser Valleys) which I won first at. I’m looking forward to Fraser Valleys this week.
Parts I like about the school and its activities are: The eighty minute lunch break, physical education, the number of friendly people, the numbers of clubs and teams (Like I said, I have no time for all), how it’s close to the recreation centre, and the clean bathrooms. I even like how the school is located in the middle of a small forest.

Parts I think need improving on are: We need to get a track (What’s the point of having three soccer fields we share with the recreation centre? We should replace one the a track), as well has other sporting locations like: a swimming pool (Would help our swim team by having daily practices there), as well as more and bigger gymnasiums so more students can enjoy gym sports at once.

Model United Nations Club

During the M.U.N. meeting I attended to they went through the event coming up in Downtown. This year they will be getting sweaters. The meetings are every Fridays after at lunch in room 214, they sometimes meet up after school. I guess you technically debate about global crisis in M.U.N. so it's like joining the debate club, if you enjoy debating recommend joining either debate or M.U.N. In the end I decided not to join, even though I didn't join I would recommend you join, have fun, and make friends!

Robotics Club

Last week I visited the robotics club. In this club you learn how to build robots. Some of the robots that you build can pick up paper, cans and bottles. Some of the more advanced robots can go really fast and pick things up to. You should join this club because its really fun and you will meet lots of new people and make new friends. You can come in and visit the club at 11:00 a.m to 12:00 noon on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but sometimes on Monday and Tuesday. My initial thought when I first walked in was that this was a cool club and I will want to come back again and work on robots and make my own. The pros to joining this club are that you will make new friends. The cons are that you might get very frustrated because it’s very hard and challenging. You also might enjoy it so much that you miss flextime to go to the robotics club. I strongly suggest that you join the Robotics club.
